Definition: Operations Research or operational research is the discipline of applying advanced analytical methods and problem-solving techniques to help make better and more efficient decisions and build more productive systems.
OR achieves this by using techniques such as mathematical modeling and simulation to analyze complex situations.
OR typically focuses on practical applications and on human-technology interaction. It has a computational and statistical background.
The field of OR gradually expanded from its original industrial engineering and operations management background. Modern synonyms are 'management science' and 'decision science' or even business analytics.
