Five S

   

Definition: Five S is a workplace organization model developed by Hiroyuki Hirano used in Kaizen, Just-in-time, Toyota Production System and Lean Manufacturing for good workplace 'housekeeping'. The 5 S-es are 5 Japanese/English words:
1. Seiri - Sorting, tidiness
2. Seiton - Straightening or Setting in order, orderliness
3. Seiso - Sweeping or Shine, cleanliness
4. Seiketsu - Standardizing, standardized clean-up
5. Shitsuke - Sustaining the Practice, discipline
Sometimes 3 more S-es are added: 6. Safety, 7. Security and 8. Satisfaction.
The main benefits of the 5S are: improved productivity, quality and health and safety.
