Total Productive Maintenance

Definition: Total Productive Maintenance is a maintenance philosophy of Japanese origin for improved machine and plant condition and availability. It aims at avoiding waste through better utilization of maintenance and production resources.
To achieve this objective, preventive and predictive maintenance is required.
Other than in traditional factories, in TPM machine operators are trained to perform most day-to-day maintenance and fault-finding. This allows them to correct issues before they can impact production and by so doing, decrease downtime and reduce costs of production.
TPM is an extension of Total Quality Management and a critical adjunct to Lean Manufacturing.
