Communication Apprehension

   

Definition: Communication Apprehension is a broad term which describes the anxiety or fear related to real or anticipated comunication with others. In other words, it is a broadly based anxiety related to oral communication.
Four types of communication apprehension are:
1. Trait Anxiety - personality type of CA whereby an individual has an orientation to feel anxiety during communication - regardless of the situation.
2. Context Anxiety - triggered by a specific context, for example a surrounding of uncertainty.
3. Audience Anxiety - prompted by specific audience characteristics, for example the audience status.
4. Situation Anxiety - psychological reaction of a person due to a specific situation.
